2006 news

Enjoy a good hike in 2007

New for 2007 is this huge water that if you choose to walk round, looking for the perfect peg, you will tramp four miles. If you look closely at the small picture you will see two people standing by the fence. This should give you some idea of the scale. The water contains big Bream and pike plus very big trout amongst other species. At one end the water is one hundred feet in depth. More on this water will follow in 2007.

Another satisfied customer
"Having not fished since I was a young lad and only in the local park. Got the itch and joined BMAC on recommendation of 'Uncle Graham' Oldfield. Joined 31 July 2006, First trip out, Border Fisheries ( Three Island Pool) on Saturday 5 Aug. My first Carp ever, 3.5 lbs on paste made from pellets obtained at Border.
You've made a nearly old man very happy.
Many thanks."

Birkin  Giant Hog Weed
Victorian plant explorers brought Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) into this country in the late 1800's, it is a pity they did not leave it where it was.

As some will know this plant is a problem on the River Birkin however, a work party has spent time removing the problem for this year. More details here.

A family orientated club
For as long as I have been connected with the Bay Malton Angling it has strived to appeal and provide safe fishing for all the family. This is especially true today with some of the club waters offering excellent facilities for families with children. With this in mind it was pleasing to receive the following e mail from club member Neil Fallows.

"Hi, joined my 8 year old Alex into the club. He has been with me 4 times to Border. His best catch was a fantastic 114 fish, mainly Rudd, Roach, Orfe and a few Carp. His best fish was this 13lb 8oz common on the pole. Just like to thank you all for giving us a great time. Cheers, Neil."

Vigilance and bird flu
With the ever growing threat of bird flu reaching our shores we should all be aware of what to look for. Anglers are in a unique position as our sport takes us into the habitat of the animals that can spread this disease. So this is what you can do to help. Whilst out fishing keep your eyes open on the bird life, especially the large birds such as Swans, Ducks and Geese. If you see any of these birds dead or dying, with no apparent injury, please do not touch. Instead report your findings to a club bailiff, the head bailiff water keeper, or a club committee member and we will do the rest. Please, once again, do not touch any dead or dying birds and be on your guard.
(Head bailiff/water keeper)

March 14th 2006

More water than Severn Trent or Thames?
Bay Malton Angling Club is pleased to announce the acquisition of another new water this being in the High Leigh area. Bath Pool is a large pool with specimen Roach and Bream. Even though it is large there will only be six pegs in keeping with the specimen nature of the fish i.e Roach to over two pounds. The pool will be open for fishing in June at the end of the close season which will be in effect every year. A little nearer to June there will be a page of images of this water.

March 13th 2006

Keep nets
Keep nets can now be used again on Bay Malton still waters from June 1st 2006, however the length must be fully staked out and no fish over three pounds can be retained. Before using a keep net check the rules, on the board, at the water you are fishing as there are some still waters where they are not allowed in any event. Please make sure you dip them.

Acres and acres of angling pleasure for BMAC members
If you enjoy the challenge of fishing on a big water then what follows will appeal in spades. It is a pleasure to let you know that from now Lymm Dam is a Bay Malton water. Lymm Dam will appeal to everyone not just big water anglers, I have had many enjoyable days there fishing the shallows.

The water is in a beautiful setting which I hope all members will strive to keep that way. It is worth pointing out that the setting is also shared by the public so BMAC members and what they do will be seen at all times.

As soon as I have a date that the water can be fished, together with conditions, I will post it here. In the meantime there will be, at the weekend, a page of photographs from Lymm, on the head water keeper's pages.

Salmon update
There is more news on Mersey Salmon the EA having been back in touch with Dave Wing.

 Dear Mr Wing,
Thank you for reporting the dead salmon that you found on the MSC, I have attached some general information about the Mersey Salmon trapping and radiotracking project that we are currently runnning:
Mersey Salmon Radiotracking Project. We started trapping salmon at Woolston Weir (River Mersey at Warrington) on the 18th of October and we finished trapping on the 4th of November. A total of 42 Salmon Salmo salar were caught in the trap (in 10 days).
Fish that appeared healthy were fitted with ingestible SAL3 radio-tags (a total of 24 fish were tagged) and were released upstream of the weir.
The aim of the project is to track the fish through the catchment to determine: salmon spawning areas their response to obstructions i.e weirs
We used a combination of active radio-tracking (with antennas and receivers) and static radiotracking techniques (5 static listening stations were set up in the catchment, one set on the River Goyt at Otterspool, one on the River Bollin at Dunham and three sets on the River Mersey at Northenden, Bollin Point and Spittle Point).
Using a mobile antenna and receiver on Friday the 21st October the team recorded 5 fish just above the weir at Woolston, 5 others had migrated upstream (to unknown locations), but one fish was found below Heatley Mill Weir on the River Bollin (approx 6.5km u/s from Woolston Weir) at SJ7030088733.
The remainder of the fish are currently missing in the catchment but
mobile radiotracking is stilll being carried out. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards, Simon Hirst (Reproduced with permission of the E.A.)

Changing shape of the Dane
As happens from time with rivers, serious past flooding has changed the course of the river Dane at Cotton Farm. The stretch in question is the horse shoe which is down from the motorway bridge. From what I understand this has created a much wider stretch with an island. Fishing from that island, you are advised, could be dangerous, for example if there is sudden rise in water levels. For your safety please do not fish from the island. It is also worth bearing in mind that the new banking edge could very crumbly.

Manchester Ship Canal Salmon

Having had a fruitless time on the river Bollin Dave Wing (member) thought his luck had changed when he took this 28 inch 10lb cock salmon from the ship canal near to where he works; sadly it was dead. Dave called in the E.A. who have taken it away. Sending fish scales away for study will be able to tell them, and Dave, how old the fish was and how long it had spent in fresh water. They will also be able to tell Dave how many years it spent at sea and if it had managed to spawn.

The E.A. also told Dave that last year (2004?) they caught 30 plus Salmon in their trap below Woolston Weir on the Mersey and this year in October (2005?)  they caught 40 plus in just ten days. If that wasn't enough they have found two spawning sites in the Goyt. They also confirmed that Salmon and Sea Trout have been seen trying to get up the weir at Heatley just below our stretch. New club appointment
Dominic Swain has been appointed as 'Assistant to the head bailiff'. Originally from Norfolk Dominic spent many years fishing the Norwich rivers Wensum and Yare and though self taught became quite good at it.

He has been an active member of BMAC for many years being both on the committee and featuring in the trophy cabinet. After a break for a while he is pleased to be back as an assistant to Ernie, heading the bailiff team. Dominic looks forward to seeing fellow BMAC anglers at the waterside (club cards in hand) and wishes you happy fishing.
