Postponed junior match
Due to the sudden snap of cold weather, we have decided to postpone the final Junior match and presentation event until the New Year. We felt it would be to risky to set a date for the match and then to find the water Frozen over and all involved to have had a wasted visit.
We will also be having the official opening of the BMAC Angling Development Centre on the 7th Jan 2010 to which all members are welcome.

New Bag Em "Super Skimmer Dark" Groundbait.
Dear
Members if you want to bag up on a few bream before Christmas then
get into the shop at Border.
Earlier in the year I tested this product for Neil Machin and forget the Supercup and all the others get onto this, it did just what it said on the can, quite simply I bagged up on Bream down on Stacys Pool. Neil himself came out for a couple of hours on Friday and again bagged up on the skimmers, fishing through rain and wind to put together a nice net of silvers.
Stewart has got hold of the first batch from Bag Em and it is Now in the shop for you to go out and bag some fish.
Good luck, Dave

Jeff Moors Fundraiser
Over 130 anglers from across the country turned out to support a fundraising event in aid of Potteries match angling legend Jeff Moors, who has sadly been given just months to live following a battle with cancer.
The event organised by Dave Smith and held at Border Fisheries near Crewe was fished over the fourlakes of the bottom complex and despite some rain and strong winds proved to be a fantastic success.
Dave said “ When Jeff told me the news a few weeks back I was to say the least stunned,...read the full story on match news and information

Jeff Moors Fundraiser
Sadly we have recently received the news that Jeff has been given between 6 and 12 months to live following his battle with cancer. I am certain Jeff who was the Fishery manager at Border during the 90’s, is known to many members, and as such the club felt we should do something to recognise the work and commitment Jeff put into the site and angling in general.
We are therefore holding a Fundraising day on Saturday 14th November 2009. The fundraiser will take the form of a match that will use 3 Islands, Stacey’s, Meridian and Robbie’s Pools. Many top anglers have already booked in, including Tom Pickering, Neil Machin, Andy May, Kieron Rich, Darren Cox, Derek Willan, Dave Swain and many others. The draw will take place at 9am and the match will start at 10.30 am.
This means that for the day the bottom site will be closed for pleasure angling, but we hope members will understand and attend at some point to buy raffle tickets and help swell the fund for Jeff.
Many thanks to all.
Dave

Bollin advice
I bumped into you (Nigel Rogers) at the Bollin about a month ago and was grateful for the info you gave me. Anyway, went to fish it on Thursday (only managed a couple of hours in the afternoon) and was able to get good access in a couple of places.
I thought you might like to know how I got on: 5 perch each of about 6 - 8 ozs, 4 dace, and a stickleback! All came to worm on a 16 hook and using trotting method. Not the chub or trout I'd hoped for, but the river looked good and I'll certainly return. All fish came from the deep holes (much deeper than I'd previously imagined).
All the best.

Junior Match series
Yet again the junior match series has gone to the last match to determine the overall series winner, where the final match saw the young BMAC/GHOF anglers pegged on the Meridian Canal with the BMAC adults.
I am really pleased to announce that our young anglers held their own on the day in fact Harry Rushton banked a 33lb net to see him with the overall top weight of all the anglers. A tremendous effort Harry I have been waiting for 2 years to see one of our young anglers win a match that included the adults. I also know from comments passed....read more on junior events

Casting practice
Today I had a couple of hours on the above venue. Firstly if you Google the water you will notice that the 2 reservoirs share a feeder stream - I noticed that the one to the southern most reservoir is nearly dry and that the consequence of this is that this reservoirs water level is some 6 to 8 feet below that of the other. Somewhere there must be a blockage.
My main purpose of visiting this venue was to practice my casting and the things that I have been taught on the GAIA lessons in preparation for the next one, but much to my surprise I also ended up with a bit of a bonus. Fishing the entrance of the feeder to the reservoir I was catching small but extremely lively brown trout of about half a pound, which means that we must have breeding stocks of Brownies in a least the northerly of the two reservoirs (sorry no photos as I wasn't expecting to catch anything I had left both camera and phone in the car). They seem to be going for anything brown/ black and red - zulu, soldier palmer, red tag all fished wet.
I've also struck up conversation with the United Utilities Ranger - who has informed me that he has highlighted the necessity for some remedial work to be done on the steps leading up the Dam wall, so if anyone mentions it - its already in hand - when it's to be done God only knows and he aint saying much.
Since its one of the more suitable waters for practicing for my assessment I will be using this venue a lot more in the next 10 months or so, and obviously any further info will be passed on. Cheers, Nigel

Manor Farm Barbel

Brian Casserly with a superb barbel from the Manor Farm stretch of the Dane. Halibut pellet did the trick. It was my only catch of the day, just about to pack up when the rod jumped out of the rest. Lovely weather, this is what fishing is all about!
The barbel (about 6lb) was in beautiful condition.

Best Pike

Hi there,
I thought I would send these pictures of myself with my personal best pike from Lymm Dam last week. It was measured at 42 inches and came in at 27lb 5oz. I've fished the Dam for well over 15 years catching hundreds of pike, but have waited a long time to take one this size. From what I know of pike taken over the past few years I believe I'm in with a chance of a record catch for the Dam, if not very close!.
Hope you like it!.
Best Regards

Bollin Mink
I have recently received an e-mail from one of our Fly Fishers with regard to a days fishing to-day, in that he has witnessed the fact that the mink at this location are more interested in young rabbits, and more importantly he has caught a grayling on the fly just above the bridge. Nigel
Update
Further to my last - which was short due to lack of time. Can I point out that the fact that there are Grayling on the Bollin is a significant pointer to the cleanliness of the water, and that when they were informed the Environment Agency are nearly as extactic over this news as they are over the increasing presence of Salmon. This is not the only good news we have received this week from this little back-water, we have had a couple of 2.5lb trout and one of 12ozs, a Chub of 2.5lb, 4 perch and some dace (probably some of the re-stocking we did earlier) and of course the Grayling - all be it only 6ozs but there it is - as you said earlier in the year this water is somewhat under estimated. If we could only continue in this vein and mention to members that this is the sort of report that could be consistently made if only members were to report what they catch and which of our waters their catch was made on.

Happy Members
On Saturday 20 June my friend Alan Wilkins and I spent the morning fishing the Manor farm stretch of the River Dane. The fishing was excellent we had a good number of Chub around the 4lb mark Alan then topped it off with a fine Barble of 5.5lbs (pictured). All the fish were caught with maggot trotted through the swims. It was very pleasing to get good fish on the float. This is our second season in the club and we are enjoying it immensely our thanks to all the committee for your hard work.

Just a quick email to say thanks for recommending Bath Pool for my 6 year old daughters' (Abbie) first fishing trip.

As you predicted, lots of action in the first couple of hours but then tailed off before lunch.

Merrydale
Having a bad time on Lymm Dam, September 5th, not a bite in three hours, myself and my brother decided to try Merrydale for the first time, and what a good time we had. Nothing of any size caught but plenty of small stuff in great condition. Rudd, perch, roach and the occasional crucian.
Having chatted to the owner of the pool, he informed us that there are plenty of tench in there, so we will definately be giving it another go. A nice change from catching carp all day at Border.

Snake spotting
Graham Ingham writes, "I have seen Grass snakes on Robbies before, green with distinctive yellow band at back of head. Perfectly harmless to an angler but lethal to frogs and mice."
I am sure that many members will know the differences between the three native British snakes and the slow worm. For those that do not you can click on the link below for more information. However whenever you are not sure it is best to leave alone. Also note all British snakes are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 from being killed, injured or sold.

Snake encounter
Whilst fishing Robbies recently on Peg 16, corner near the golf course, as advised by Dave Smith, I was startled by a snake, approx 2ft long, swimming straight past me, left to right. It was no more that 1ft out from the peg and felt a bit close for comfort. It's the first time I have seen a snake in the wild and it did unsettle me for a while. I was wondering if there are any other reports of snakes being seen at Borders? I don't recall any distinctive patterning on it and can only presume it was a grass snake, I think adders are more heavily patterned.

Catching the same fish
Re the previous communications about catching the same fish. I got a barbel of 6lb 5oz on Friday 24th July. I went to same swim again tonight 27th July this time with my son. He got a barbel of 6lb 4 oz. As it lay there being unhooked I said to my son that it could have been the same fish but mine had an open sore in the middle of its flank.... he then turned it over and there was the open sore. I checked with my previous photo and it was on the same side so no doubt the same fish.
It really makes you wonder on a small river with so few fish holding spots how many fish are the same fish but caught by different anglers. Lately people have told me about 9lb barbel being caught on Cotton farm but how many different 9lb barbel can there be realistically?

Slow fishing
A few people have complained to the Head Water Keeper with regard to the slow fishing on BMAC waters. The reason for this is, obviously, the very hot weather we have just experienced. Forgetful Chub
Interesting incident on the Dane at Cotton Farm. I caught a chub about 2lb on a black slug which found it’s way into my bait box. On netting I saw it had a large hole in it’s right flank, maybe from a heron or pike or even a mink? It was returned and seemed ok. 30 minutes later, after having caught 2 more chub, I had a savage bite on a halibut pellet. I netted it to find the same fish, same hole in it’s side!. I can only assume it thought it was safe taking a different food source. Makes you wonder whether they have a memory of capture and how often we catch the same fish? I’d be interested to know if anyone has caught the same fish twice in a session or even this one? I also lost a large fish which went downstream like a submarine, I don’t think it was a Barbel, are there any large carp in the Dane?

I went with Ernie and Domonic for an inspection of the Dane at Cotton Hall and Manor Farm. This was the first time I had visited since September last year. I noticed that a few of the good pegs had been washed away but this has created new ones 30 yards down stream. As you can see by the photos the river is colored and at the right levels. I decided to take a few photo's to wet the appetite for the 16th June. I will be on there myself late after noon so hoping to put a good report together on how it's fishing.

Ben Maddison's surprise

Caught on the 22nd May on Peg 1 on the Specimen Lake By Bay Malton Junior angler of the year Ben Maddison. Ben was using the flat Inline method on hair rigged double corn with a size 14 and Machin's Method mix. Thought to be a Golden Fantail of over two pounds. When hooked it "popped up like a pike bung" and certainly made Ben's face light up. Its picture now adorns the wall of the Border Cafe.

Day ticket satisfaction
Hello there. I'm not a member of the club, but I will be for next season. The fishing on Lymn Dam is fantastic. I pay for a day ticket, and it is well worth the money. The other week I was pulling bream out, and lost count, the heaviest being just over 10lb. I've been again today (9th May) and scored with 2 fantastic fighters, the first a Common Carp at 22lb, that took about 45 mins to land, the second, another Common at 17lb 8oz, that took about 10 mins to land. The fish were imaculate, the cleanest I've seen so far. I just thought to let you know about the catches. Only two fish, but well worth the fights with them.
Cheers. Kev Nolan.

Fly on the Bollin
Just a short line passed on from one of our regulars on this stretch, he recently caught two brownies - one of 2lb and the other about 4ozs unfortunately like so many fly fishermen we are loners and find it difficult to photo ourselves (not too sure if that's through inability or just not wanting to scare everyone) . these two were both attracted to a red tag fished wet. His other conquest on that occasion was a dace which rose to a black spider which he had tied himself, dace are known to rise to dry fly if the weather conditions are suitable. For the record the angler in question was one C Gibbon

Filming at Border
Thanks to all the members who joined in, helped out or took part in the recent “Get Hooked on Fishing” series filmed at Border last week. The film crew and guests were all impressed with the set up and staffing at the site, and moreover the general appearance and cleanliness of the venue. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of them in the future, in fact Kieron Rich has already booked a coaching session on the Specimen Lake.
Guests who attended were: Kieron Rich – Monday, Darren Cox – Tuesday, Jamie Masson - Wednesday. Cudmore saw: Steve Ringer - Thursday, Andy May - Friday
Junior Peer coaches, Hollie and Thomas Smith, Mike Fenner and Tom Purkiss all got in on the filming and did a great job, to such an extent I think they may be presenting any future shows not me!
Online fishing TV have also provided BMAC members with a discount should they wish to join the channel. More info to follow on this in the near future.
Once again thanks to all those who helped out, and also to those who kept out of the way, politely giving the film crew room to operate. Sadly we could not keep “Rooster” at bay and he did manage to collar poor Jamie Masson. Jamie’s doctors however assure me Jamie will soon be back to full health and the trauma of meeting Rooster should wear off over the next months.

Leakage
A leakage was recently reported at Lymm Dam. This was from a pipe that was leaking a milky liquid onto concrete steps and into the Dam. A similar incident occurred last year and, as this time, the E.A. were notified. Their report stated that this was not polluting. As yet they have not reported on the present leakage but when they do you will be kept informed.

Rod licence campaign
Today, April 2nd, the Environment Agency chose to launch their 2009 Rod Licence campaign from Gibbos Pool at the Border site.
Frank and Joe proved to be the stars of the show by posing for pictures with giant rod licenses, which were being inspected by EA officer Andy Eaves. Get Hooked on Fishing junior coach Hollie (age 8) also proved a hit by demonstrating on the pole and delivering coaching sessions to EA officers Emma Adams and Kate Selby. Hollie also handed out goodie bags provided by her sponsors Nash Tackle to all the junior anglers. Topping off the day was a flying visit by Neil Machin who signed autographs for the youngsters and posed for a few pictures.
The day was a great success and can only be good for both the club and the Border site, as the pictures will now appear in all the EA literature. Well done to all members and club officials who worked so hard to bring this day about.

Popular Sunday

Please find attached some photos. They were taken Sunday 15 March on Staceys Pool. The first warm Sunday of the year and my first Sunday visit to border. All the other pools were equally well occupied. Pleased to say I caught a double figure mirror carp that took 5 minuets to land.

Match Fishing Magazine at Border
Today saw Neil Machin and Pete Goodman visit the Border site to shoot two features for Match Fishing magazine. The DHP publication sent reporter and top match angler Jon Arthur to capture the images, and it was a real pleasure to meet up with them all again. In fact the last time the four of us got together, Jon and Neil were fishing against each other in the Fishomania 2008 final, I was coaching and Pete was there as a spectator.
Both Neil and Pete are part of the “Bag Em” baits match team, and both were keen to demonstrate the power of the new Bag Em range that is due to hit the shops in April this year. Pete fished Gibbos pool from peg 11 targeting the new stockfish on a variety of pole lines and Neil fished the Specimen Pool from peg 24 on the method feeder. I myself was particularly interested to see how Neil fared as through out last year Neil and I had fished together and tried out some of the mixes that Neil was developing, and I really wanted to see how the end product shaped up.
Well as usual
Mr. Machin had put his name to a winning product, the tip from the
start went round and the fish mounted up in the net, which topped out
at over 80lb by the end of the session. A fantastic result for a March
morning compounded by the fact that Mr Arthur wanted to take most of
the pictures from the water directly in front of Neil. Pete was also
treated to a wading photographer and massed up a tremendous net of over
50lb of smaller fish,
from both long
and margin lines, despite Jon’s frequent paddling antics.
In short the day was a great success for both Bag Em and Border with fish falling to all the new range of products and show casing the venue and club in general. The only remaining issue is, will I ever convert Neil to fishing with plastic baits. Well that’s a separate story and if you see me around the waters I will tell you more about it. The group photo shows left to right: Pete Goodman, Stewart Godber, Jon Arthur and Neil Machin
There are plans for many more features and more of my celebrity angling mates will be visiting the Border site so watch this space and pop along to meet them who knows they may pick up a few tips from you, lord knows some of them need it.

On line fishing TV dates
Dates for my “Get Hooked on Fishing” series with “Onlinefishing TV” have now been set, my guests and programme topics are as follows:
- Mon 27th April - Kieron Rich - Waggler fishing Specimen Lake
- Tue 28th April - Darren Cox - Margin Fishing 3 Islands
- Wed 29th April - Neil Machin - Whip and pole Gibbos
- Thu 30th April - Steve Ringer - Feeder Cudmore
- Fri 1st May - Andy May - Pellet Waggler Cudmore
All BMAC members are welcome to come along and see how the series is put together, and to meet the guests. However please be aware that we will be filming all through each day, so please be quiet and choose your opportunity to chat to the lads wisely. The production company insisted the series reflect different venues within Staffordshire and Cheshire hence the inclusion of Cudmore, however the up side is that Border has the lions share and will automatically feature in future series.
This is a great opportunity for the club to showcase the Border venue and although I will be the one who is in front of the camera, we must not loose sight of the fact that the BMAC committee and Border site staff have gone a long way to making the series possible through their support and commitment to the Junior section. On behalf of all involved with Get Hooked and junior angling in general may I take this opportunity to pass on my appreciation of all that unseen hard work. At the end of the day you are the real stars of the series, and I thank all of you for all your effort. I know that it is political suicide to single out individuals, however without Stewart Godber’s assistance my fellow coaches and I could not have accomplished what we with our junior anglers.
Thanks Stew.

Is this a record?

Please find attached the photo of a Pike I pulled out of Lymm Dam on the 17th Feburary weighing 27lbs.The fish was good and healthy. I have some witnesses as the fish was that big I had to ring up a couple of friends to help me get it out of the water. I don't know whether this is a record for the Dam but would love to know if there is one.

Bait less catch

My son Alex (age 11) was over the moon when he caught this big perch at Byley Fishery on Yatehouse pool back in October. It was caught on a bare hook! He had put his rod down to speak to his Dad on the mobile when suddenly the float shot away across the pool! We reckoned it was about 3lb....Sarah Clegg

BMAC featured on 'onlinefishingtv'
There are some really exciting times ahead for the BMAC/GHOF juniors during April 2009.
I have been asked to present a new series of fishing programmes for “Onlinefishing TV” the subject of these programmes will be young people and their involvement with Get Hooked on Fishing. The series will highlight the work of Get Hooked and show how the scheme assists young anglers with not only their angling but also with a variety of other issues within their lives.
There will be five shows in the series and each show will involve a Celebrity guest who will assist with, the technical content and coaching. The proposed guests are currently being contacted to check on their availability and if all are available the series will take the following format.
-
Pole and whip fishing Neil Machin Gibbos Pool (Border)
-
Feeder Fishing Steve Ringer Arena (Cudmore)
-
Waggler Fishing Bob Nudd Specimen Lake (Border)
-
River Fishing Andy May River Dane (Cotton)
-
Margin Fishing Darren Cox TBA
The filming for the shows will take place during the week of 27th April 2009 the exact dates, venues and confirmed guests will appear on the club web site once they are known. For BMAC members this means that you will be able to get up close and personal with the guests and pick their brains once the filming is done. It will also give the club a tremendous opportunity to showcase the work that is being undertaken with junior anglers, and highlight selected club waters and the fish within.
A selection of the groups that we worked with during 2008 will be invited to return for the filming and asked to provide young anglers for each show. The GHOF Peer coaches along with the celebrities will then meet each group and explain the aims of the particular session and demonstrate their angling and coaching skills to camera during the delivery of the session.
All in all this is a very exciting time for the Club and GHOF and all involved are looking forward to producing a great angling series for junior anglers. (Dave Smith)

Dace stocking

Further to my last news report about the Bollin at Bowden, here's some more good news for the new year. On Tuesday 13th of Jan as part of an ongoing partnership between ourselves and the Environment Agency, a team visited the river with approximately 3000 Dace of between 4.5 and 5 inches which they had reared for us at their fish hatchery at Leyland. These have been introduced into the upper reaches of our stretch of the river at Bowden. I have been reliably informed that for the first day or so they should remain in close proximity to where they were introduced before spreading further afield, and to encourage them to stay in our waters I have been feeding the area quite intensively (probably much to the inconvenience of our illustrious Head Water Keeper who has had to arrange further supplies of fish pellets via Dom Swain). Rumour has it that further stocking is on the cards possibly of some young Chub.
