Work parties at Brookbank

The work party spent the last 2 Saturdays at Brookbank. They erected a new urinal screen. Repaired pegs and made a conservation area. For anyone interested in helping  it is not all hard work. There is usually a brake for tea and a butty. Ably provided by our head cook Malc. - Mel Betts

Improvements at Merry Dale consisted of relaying the flags for the pegs. Thinning out the reeds and planting some shrubs. These, when they have grown, will act as a wind brake. The last photo shows our head water keeper after all his hard work.   Mel Betts

Cormorant defences

We built 5 Anti-Cormorant protection cages at Lymm Dam on Saturday 24th April. Andy and Ian from the Environment Agency showed the water management team how to build the cages assisted by Elaine one of the Lymm Rangers.
We built the cages using strong wire mesh and tied on plastic mesh over the top, inserted wood brash and connected up 4 cages into a pyramid shape to form 1 Anti-Cormorant protection cage.
The cages were put on the E.A. boat and then motored out to the centre of Lymm Dam.
Attached to the cage is a rope with a buoy, so look out for these buoys at Lymm Dam when you are casting, please avoid casting to them as you will lose valuable end tackle.
Thanks to the E.A. for their assistance and to Malc for the excellent food cooked for everyone who took part in these Lymm Dam improvement.
Good reports of quality bream, roach, pike and carp being caught at Lymm Dam in the last 2 weeks with a 22lb Carp landed which was one of the carp stocked in late march."
Also -- Work near completion at Ashley Pool with new stages, clearing algae, de-weeding and overgrown trees cut back. Do not use the last peg as the top section of the stage is not finished.
This pool was closed for repair but to clarify when we close the pool for work parties it will only be for the day and re-open the next day or even late afternoon on same day of the work party.
Please advise us of your catches on Ashley so we can keep assessing this pool.
Two recent reports at Thornhills Fishery of mainly carp to 5lb, roach with 3 over 1lb and barbel.-

Birkin work party, Hogweed clearance

Giant hogweed is a nuisance on the Birkin where it will be a battle to eradicate. It can be kept down year by year before it seeds. Over time this will thin out the new yearly growth. If you come across Giant Hogweed do not touch as the sap can cause serious skin blistering. Instead report the location of the plant to the head waterkeeper.

To help with Hogweed eradication on the Birkin BM work parties embark on a program of removal.
