Bay Malton Game Angling

2nd September 2011

Hi!  Here we are once again, with what looks like a mixed weather situation on our hands for the weekend - mainly overcast with the occasional shower of rain, and the only chance of any sunshine seems to be later on, on Sunday.  I am rapidly comming to the opinion that this may well not be a bad thing.  I have noticed that, on the Bollin at least, during a warm period there seems to be no evidence of “life” at all, whereas as soon as it starts to cool down the fish start to rise again, only to disappear again when the temperature drops too low.  I am also beginning to come to the same conclusion that one or two of our older “hands” have, that when the rain starts there is also more likelyhood of ‘terestrials’ being washed off the overhanging vegitation.  I know - I’m a bit old fashioned, I still tie North Country Spiders, and so on - an old eccentric if ever there was one, but you know what they say, it takes all sorts.

River Levels:

DANE ...........................0.28 Metres
GOWY ..........................0.21 Metres
BOLLIN .........................0.47 Metres
RIBBLE .........................1.02 Metres

I wish to take this chance to thank the readers of this collumn of not joining in the witch hunt/chinese whispering campagne which I hope will be behind us very soon, the only thing it seems to be achieving at the moment is pitting friend against friend.  A situation we can do well without.  Enough of “politics” - we are above such things - have a great weekend away fro the grindstone, and as I say the weather gives you a supperlative excuse for not mowing the lawn.

KEEP THE FAITH

Tightlines to you all

Thursday 25 August 2011

OK I know I’m a bit early - well a day early - but the sun is shinning so what the heck, (just hope the rain stays off for a while).  Anyway I happen to be a bit busy this weekend so I think early is better than not at all.  So, dearly beloved, here are this weeks river levels as at 1500 hrs to-day (three o-clock this afternoon for the uninitiated) (The great grey, green, greasey, Limpopo is not included)
DANE….................................0.26 Metres
GOWY…................................0.21 Metres
BOLLIN ................................ 0.75 Metres
RIBBLE…...............................0.12 Metres
The other reminder is - DON’T FORGET SATURDAY - Dunham Fisheries.  As I have said before just bring what gear you have and we will do our utmost to make up what you require for the morning.
I will be bringing along a selection of 20 flies tied by a couple of local lads, the dearest is 0.80p and includes Salmon singles through to small flies for trout and grayling.  As I have said previously these are tied by men who have used these designs and therefore know that we are not in the habbit of tying flies on to a leader for the sake of it, and just watching them disintegrate over two or three casts.

Casting Clinic

To start with let me explain that I do not keep track of face book, the reason for this is that there are 4 sites operated from this one computer and should one wish to go on face book the others have to close their face book access down - otherwise they cross.  Please don’t ask me why, I neither know or want to know.  Right that’s out of the way, what I have noticed is that the e-mail notification from face book still gets through to me and that is why I have added this paragraph to yesterdays entry, I see that a prospective client for the Casting Clinic was asking for details of what gear he needs to bring with him.  The answer to this is bring what you have in the way of fly fishing gear, mainly what is required is a fly rod and reel and fly line with a leader attached.  Anything you don’t have we will try and make up for the lesson period, but mainly bring YOURSELF, you are the important bit.
It is now 1230 hrs - alright half past twelve to you civilians,- and the sun is shinning if you are still indoors, WHY?, (my excuse is that the wife has had me out shopping - well it has to be done) if not have a great weekend, see you all soon.

Right - to the important bits - here are this weeks river levels, taken at 0430 hrs this morning:

DANE .......................................................0.27 Metres
GOWY ......................................................0.21 Metres
BOLLIN .....................................................0.51 Metres
RIBBLE .....................................................0.24 Metres

Have a good weekend and tightlines to you all.  The weather seems to be quite mixed, but you know my opinion on that one.

Cheers

Friday 12th August 2011

It’s that time of the week again, and as I sit here at the keyboard and glance out of the window, the normal British Summer greets me, rather wet to say the least.  So to cut a long story short, the following river levels could change at any given moment over the weekend.

DANE….......................................0.43 Metres
GOWY…......................................0.36 Metres
BOLLIN….....................................0.64 Metres
RIBBLE….....................................1.34 Metres

All except the Bollin were taken at 0430 hrs this morning, the Bollin was at 1315 hrs this afternoon.

A couple of local gents who have retired from fly fishing have gone into tying flies not only for a hobby but also to sell these products. From the prices that I have seen they are quite competative and are local (well to me they are local).  What this means is that - for those of you who do not tie your own - we now have a source of flies somewhat nearer than the Chinese main land, flies that are reliably made by people who have used them and who know what is expected of them.  I don’t know about the rest of you but I started to tie my own because the commercially produced item usually fell apart after a few casts, let alone being ravaged by a trout.  Some weeks ago I asked if they could put together a sample board which we could have a look at, this should arrive about Monday next.  Between now and then I have to find some way of “transplanting” that information onto this site. If you see anything you would like I will be posting the details here in the near future.

Tightlines everybody, don’t let the weather get you down
