Mitchell House Reservoirs

The two reservoirs at Mitchells House were fished and stocked by Accrington Fly Fishing Club, but this closed down some time ago due to dwindling membership, it lay “fallow” for some seven or eight years before we took it over.  On the occasions I have fished it I have caught and witnessed a resident stock of brown trout which seem to have been washed in from the feeder stream, grown and bred on. The feeder stream having been stocked with browns at some time, the smaller fish washed over the sluice and unable to escape.  Judging from the surface evidence some of the more mature fish are quite large.  I have found that you are best off using the usual large water set up - that is a nine and a half or ten foot rod around 6 weight, and possibly the usual reservoir lure, though I am some what old fashioned tend to use North Country Spiders or a dropper rig with a dry at the surface and a couple of nymphs about nine to ten feet down, depending on where the fish are feeding.

Needless to say catch and return is strictly the order of the day and at the moment we of the Fly Fishing Fraternity have the place to ourselves so please lets have a few more visitors.

We are hoping to improve the stock in these two waters with some rainbow and so on but it is not the right time of year to move game fish at moment, I will keep you informed.

Directions: From the M60 take Junction 18/4 for Bury, Just before Rawtenstall take the A56 toward Accrington, Follow until you reach a large roundabout, stay on the A56 for a further 1.5 to 2 miles when you will find a break in the central reservation with a “No U Turn” sign and the access to a farm, come back down the opposite side of the road for a couple of hundred yards and you will find the entrance to the reservoir. Go over two cattle grids and you can’t miss our car park. Tightlines.

Brookhouse Pool

Brookhouse Pool is an attractive large large lake set out to thirty stages with plenty of room in between. Parking at this venue is right by the water making it ideal for those with a disability. In fact there are three pegs reserved for the disabled right by the car park.

The water contains Mirror, Common and Crucian Carp, Golden Rudd, Tench, Chub, Bream and Perch.

Plenty of rules specific to this water apply so do check your rule book before fishing.

Merrydale

There are only ten stages at Merrydale but it is the kind of place where almost anyone can catch. It is in a beautiful location and can give a very peaceful day of fishing. There are a lot of small fish in this water as well as some good sized Tench.

For rules that apply to this water please see your club book.

Moore pool

Moor pool is a smallish round ex clay pit in an attractive location near to Altrincham and Lymm. The size can, however, be deceiving as it contains some very large Carp apart from Perch, Crucians, Rudd and Bream.

You will need a key to unlock the gate and whilst there strict observance of the rules of this water apply. You will find the rules in your club book as well as on a board at the water.

Dovehouse Pool

Dovehouse Pool is just under two acres with a depth of 3’ to 10’ Known species are: large Common and Mirror Carp, small Carp, Crucian Carp, Tench, Bream, Roach, Rudd, Chub and the odd Trout.

Directions
From the M6 leave at junction 16 and head West as though going to Border or Crewe. When you reach the roundabout with the turnig for Border follow the signs for Hough on the A52. Travel for about half a mile and you will come to a railway bridge with traffic lights, go over bridge and travel for about half a mile, be aware of speed cameras. Turn left into Cobb Lane and follow for about three quarters of a mile. Dovehouse farm is the first big farm on the right hand side, set back from the road. Look for the club sign at the entrance to the farm track. Drive slowly and follow the track for 200yds. Go through the barrier gate on theleft and look for the pointer sign. Follow hedge row for 150yds whilst looking for the car park sign. Go through gate number two and onto the car park. The pool is in front of you.

Brookbank

If the fishing is slow at Brookbank you do, at least, have a view of Jodrell Bank telescope. This is not a huge pool but is set in attractive countryside and does contain some large carp. Parking is good and if you can still get in through the gate, to the right of the water, you should be able to park right next to your peg. The end furthest from the road is very deep.

I do know it contains large Carp and a good number of Crucians. Please read your club book for rules applying to this water.

Border fisheries

The Border Fisheries complex will provide fishing to suit any style or liking. Big specimen fish to small silver fish and everything in between. The views above are of the Specimen Pool and the Meridian Canal. There are a further six waters to fish on this complex which means that you could fish it for ever and still not grow tired. Border is also an Ideal venue for other organisations to book a match.

Border is a safe environment Ideal for all the family. Toilet, shop and catering facilities plus Bay Malton people on site all day to look after things. Ample car parking and a good venue for disabled anglers.

With the addition of the top complex, at Border fisheries, you now have seven top class waters to fish covering any style of still water angling you could wish for. Food from a butty van at the bottom complex and a cafe at the top complex together with clean toilets. This is family fishing at its best with two hundred and forty seven pegs to choose from. Whilst Bay Malton do run matches at Border there is plenty of room for everyone.

You will need a key to enter the complex and a good read of the rules that apply to Border. For more on Border you can visit the pages dedicated to this complex.

Bentley pool

This water is a lovely secluded spot set in a small wooded valley. There is an island and the water is stream fed - formed by a dam at the far end. It’s very deep here and shallows off towards the near end where the stream enters. The pegs around and opposite the island are a good bet but don’t fish too far out as the fish are often caught in the warmer water near the margins.

Known for its big tench and carp (up to over 20lbs), there are also Roach, Rudd, Blue Dace, Bream, Crucian Carp, large Trout and Chub. Trout must be returned to the water immediately. Please read your club book for all rules applicable to this water.

Bath pool

Bath pool only has six pegs but they are set in beautiful surroundings that are sure to please most anglers. All the pegs are set well away from each other so you will have a feeling of spaciousness.

The water holds specimen Roach and, mainly, other silver fish. Angling like it used to be, with all fish having to be landed by net.

This water is closed from March 15th to June 16th. For other rules affecting this water please see your club book.

Ashley Hall Pool

Ashley Hall Pool is an attractive water, that has good parking nearby and is easy to get to. It could be best described as a large pond but with only ten pegs it feels very spacious. The surroundings, arable fields, are attractive and provide an away from it all days fishing.

The fishing is mixed with the water containing Carp, Roach, Rudd, Perch, Tench and Bream

River Dane

The Bay Malton controls four stretches of the Dane providing some of the best river fishing in this part of the world. All four stretches are different in character with tree lined banks to meandering through open field. Some very high banking, gravel runs, twists and turns, deep holes, in fact every challenge the river angler could want.

Chub, Roach, Dace, Grayling, Perch, Pike, Trout and Barbel, some into the doubles, are the fish you can target in the Dane.

Please read your club book for rules applying to the Dane.
