Who we are

Get Hooked on Fishing Border (GHOFB) is a chartered member of the national Get Hooked on Fishing organisation. Charity #1101901

GHOF currently delivers angling to local youngsters from High schools, Primary schools and youth clubs, with the aim of reducing anti social behaviour and crime in youngsters age 8 to 18. Last year we delivered over 1500 angling sessions to local youngsters.

GHOFB currently has four licensed level 2 first for sport angling coaches that are supported by volunteers and helpers.

GHOFB works in partnership with Bay Malton, Staffordshire Police, Cheshire Police, Environment Agency, Local Education Authorities, Youth clubs and the British Army in its work with youngsters.

Young Peoples involvement

GHOFB employs a system of Peer Coaching where young anglers of satisfactory standard and experience assist and coach other less experienced anglers. Peer coaching is encouraged from the onset, with many youngsters aspiring to become peer coaches; this fosters team spirit and self-improvement. Peer coaches also along with young anglers write letters of thanks to tackle dealers and celebrity anglers who support us.

Moreover youngsters are able to voice their opinions on how successful events have been and where future events will take place. Youngsters are encouraged to take the initiative and develop the scheme, one group have even produced a school magazine, with little or no adult supervision.

Monitoring and Evaluation

All scheme participants’ attendance and progress is recorded on spreadsheet and these figures forwarded to the Get Hooked on Fishing Trust.

The Advisory group for the scheme monitor progress via the Coordinators report and personal involvement. The Advisory group has members drawn from the Police, Environment Agency, Education, Business, Community, Health and Safety and local government.

Schools individually track their students and report back to the Coordinator of the scheme on student development, attendance and behaviour.

The Environment Agency track rod licence sales and these figures are passed to ourselves for our area. These figures are obviously indicative of youngster’s participation in angling and can be identified by postal area.

Self-assessment is practiced by all our coaches/mentors and discussed after events, functions and meetings.

Thumbnail of how we work

 ·        We work with youngsters age 8 to 18

·        We assist schools in delivering and implementing the curriculum, both in the classroom and at the waterside.

·        We utilise a Peer Led Coaching system, which sees recognised young people mentor, deliver, demonstrate, and instruct their peers.

·        We deliver an ongoing 3 part, 3 year, modular programme that leads to accredited qualification

·        We work in partnership with many recognised authorities, Staffordshire Police, the Environment Agency and Masterline, thus promoting awareness of industry, community, environment, personal development and citizenship.

·        We provide fishing tackle for use during practical fishing sessions to allow those on limited budgets access to modern equipment.

·        We organise trips to Exhibitions and Game Fairs, we have regular articles published in the press and ongoing local radio interviews for the youngsters are in place. All improve communication skills, self-esteem and involvement for our members.
