River Dane

Just a few words to let you know what a great day me and my fellow member, Mike Hankinson had on Sunday 4th October. The water was quite low and crystal clear so we were a bit concerned as to whether we would catch anything at all. After baiting the swim up with micro pellets and a few freebies I only waited an hour before landing a fin perfect Barbel a shade under 7lb on a hair rigger 8mm halibut pellet. Very rare catching one at ten past ten in the morning after which it slowed up a bit till mike caught a very impressive Grayling just under two pound on pellet. We both thought this was quite odd. My friend Mike got talking to two fellow members who said we would not catch because it was a full moon. However we proved them wrong when I caught another two Barbel of seven pound each. It just goes to prove that with a bit of commitment you can beat the odds. I am convinced that if you keep the bait going in regular and often that the barbel's natural feeding instinct will always take over and they just cannot resist some free offerings, even when you consider I was only 6 feet away from the fish in gin clear water on a bright sunny autumnal day. Cotton Farm still never surprises me, long may it continue. Paul Burns.

I had a good day on the Dane (18th October).
I took a wander down the Cotton Farm stretch and stumbled upon a very picturesque part of the river. I fed hemp, pellets and corn. I fished double corn on the hook, I tried boilies which worked also.
In total I caught 5 barbel (4 of which are pictured below), all ranging from 4lb up to 6lb 2oz (the bottom pic). I also caught a chub of 4lb 1oz.
A beautiful Autumn day on a lovely stretch of water.

Spent a few hours float fishing on the River Dane at Pimlotts Meadow on 4 November. Had the stretch entirely to myself so started at the top of the meadow and worked my way down in the course of about four hours fishing.
Trotting maggots through the streamier swims proved most productive, resulting in a dozen grayling typically of around 6-8 oz with the best nudging the pound mark. Also one chub of about a pound and a half. All nicely conditioned fish. Also hooked what I took to be a brown trout, based on the acrobatics which eventually saw it throw the hook in mid-air.
Diverted for a time by a large mink prowling the far bank.
This was a first visit for me to Pimlotts Meadow. It made an enjoyable change float fishing for grayling rather than the usual ledgering for chub and barbel on the lower stretches. A very pleasant few hours fishing.

Went to the dane on 8/10/08 on the Cotton stretch. The river was looking good with a bit of colour and up a foot or so.
It was my first time on the river so I didn't expect to catch a lot of fish it was more of a learning session.
I fished a simple ledger rig with halibut boilies and pellets.
I managed to catch 2 Chub between 3-4lb both on pellets, not the Barbel I came for but nice fish and better than nothing.
All in all an enjoyable days out fishing, and I will definitely return for another shot at the Barbel.

August 2008
I am a newish member joining on line in April this year. I have never been a member of a fishing club before but I am very glad I joined the BMAC! I have fished at Border a couple of times and Brookehouse and Brookbank. Today, Sunday 3rd August, I thought I would give the River Dane at Pimlotts Meadow a try. I'm glad i did! Having never ever fished a river before I was a little stuck for tactics but I chopped and changed until fish started to become interested, which took the best part of three hours messing about. First fish out... a beautiful Grayling of nearly a pound on a piece of meat, then nothing again. After tripping over and loosening a stone I spotted a big fat wiggly worm, on the size 14 he went and...wallop a four and a half pound Chub! As you can imagine I was then turning over stones and rocks and collecting all these worms in a spare bait box! Over the next two hours I pulled a further two Greyling and six Chub the biggest of which was a shade over five pounds. I left there a happy chappy and will certainly be returning to the same spot. Not only was the river in lovely condition and the spot I chose a stunning location, but I also had the company of an Otter for a few minutes. All in a great mornings enjoyment. Thank you BMAC.

Just to let you know how we fared on the Dane , again many thanks!

Went to the River Dane today Tues 2nd Oct , walked to the top of the Cotton stretch in the morning with my mate who I took as a guest.

We both took our trotting rods and center pins with caster and maggots for bait , first few runs down saw the floats dart away with quick bites, when we hooked one we found Dace were the culprits. We then got a few small Chub. The swim then produced a Barbel of around 3lb, after this it went quiet. I had a wander down stream and after a few Dace caught a Grayling, my mate had never seen one before so I let him have a few runs down the glide. After a few trots through he had is first Grayling, only small but he was made up . I then had one just shy of a pound before we moved again. Some of the swims looked like they had not been fished all summer as the undergrowth  was like a jungle.  This maybe because these little swift glides don't hold many Big fish (Barbel) but all the better for us as we had quite a few Grayling up to about a pound along with a few chub to around the same size .

In the afternoon we walked  down stream onto the new Manor stretch and it was nice to explore some new river. First cast for me resulted in a Chub of 4lb, a good start, but even though the river looked good it was quiet until we found some fast water where again we had a lot of Dace another nice Grayling and a few small Chub .

We had a good day and all the Grayling is a good sign of how good the water must be!

Peter Shuff with his river RoachI know this is not a record fish but I have fished the Bay Malton stretch of the Dane since the club took it over and have had some excellent fish out i.e. barble and Chub but never a Roach. Today was my first out of this water. As you can see it has never beencaught and is in excellent condition.

You never hear of anglers catching Roach or Perch out of the Cotton Hall stretch. I was wondering if any body else has caught many of these species of fish out of this stretch. It would be nice to know if there are good stocks of river Roach and Perch in the Dane. Peter Shuff

Simon Young and his Barbel catch

Simon Young has sent in this photograph of a River Dane Barbel that he caught. I am not to sure when the catch was made but it certainly made him smile.
