Watergrove reservoir

Old Watergorve stones set into the wall

Stone set in the wallWatergrove reservoir lies at the start of the South Pennines and was created by flooding the the village of Watergrove. After the buildings were demolished, prior to flooding, some of the stones were saved and Looking down the rservoirset into the dry stone wall that runs along one end of the water. The example above shows a stone from Watergrove Mill but there are plenty more going back to the 1700's. As you leave the main car park to make your way over to the visitor centre side you pass by the wall which holds these stone. There are also one or two spots along this edge from which you can fish. Looking over the wall you get an idea of just how large an expanse of water this reservoir is (sorry, pictures are crummy, it was a bad day).

Remembrance treesTo your right you have the start of the moors. The whole area is criss crossed with old footpaths and bridalways. Ideal for walkers and pony trecking. Making your way down to the wind surfers car park and visitor centre you will also pass, on your right,  an area for remembrance trees. Plant a tree and United Utilities guarantee to look after it for a number of years. In this area, and by the visitor centre, there are benches and picnic areas. There are also toilets at the visitor centre, though everything was locked when I was there (March end), maybe things open around Easter.

HillsWhen you reach the visitor centre turn to face the moors, with your back to the water,  and there is a Information boardgood chance you will see paragliders taking off from the hills immediately in front of you. There is also a path leading away from the centre which takes you along the shore that I would consider to be the main fishing area. There are, in fact, signs up either side of the visitor centre saying no fishing beyond this point.

Left shoreAs soon as I have some information on how to fish Watergrove I will post it, the truth is that I personally find waters of this size a little intimidating so am notRight hand side the best person to give advice. I was talking to a local in the village and he did say that the last Pike that came out weighed 37 pounds. Pinch of salt needed? I don't know. The two images here show left and right of the visitor centre together with some areas where fishing is allowed.
